A company working to preserve rail heritage in north Wales In UK has said it was left fighting for survival after its income stopped during lockdown.
Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways Of UK said it had been unable to pay for repairs and conservation after having to shut during its busiest season.
Now it has been awarded a £250,000 emergency National Lottery grant.
Manager Paul Lewin said without it they would not have been able to do “highly important work”.
The company runs services on the Ffestiniog Railway in Gwynedd between Porthmadog and Tan y Bwlch, and also on its sister line, the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Beddgelert UK.
I love taking train rides on these old trains. We have several ourselves that have been struggling also.

As much as I love an old steam railway one wonders just how many more bail outs will be needed. Who’s going to fund all the unemployed Taxi drivers at Gatwick? I’m glad I’m not in charge of the Covid crisis.

I used to work on the Ffestiniog (before the WHR were part of it)… haven’t been back there for 16 years at least. Living on Shetland is part of the reason. Sad to hear that there are going to be redundancies.

I used to work on the Ffestiniog in the late 80k and early 90’s. Long before the link with the WHR. One of my walks used to be up the old track bed to Beddgelert. Glad to hear of a bit of a reprise, I had forgotten they were only going as far as Tan y Bwlch . Must be 16 years since I last used my lifelong members card. We were down training in Wales so went for a ride on the train. One of the lads I worked with was still there and A daughter of another one served me…

My Irish father was a train driver all his life in England. He used to drive steam trains and also diesel trains. We had an excellent Hornby train set with lots of steam trains. It’s great to see the photo you posted here and to hear that the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways of UK received a big grant.
